This July we will be celebrating both the City of Venice Centennial and the Semiquincentennial of the United States of America. But fifty years ago, the city was focused on the U.S. Bicentennial with events and activities that took in the Spirit of ’76. As early as 1973, local plans began to recognize the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The Sarasota County Bicentennial Commission announced that “the entire celebration will take 365 days,” and that “possibly we can tie Venice’s 50th birthday in with the celebration.” To aid that, they created a Venice Bicentennial Committee chaired by Terry Ewing.

Collectors and enthusiasts alike are drawn to these tiny treasures for their intricate designs, the stories they hold, and the nostalgia they evoke.
Recorded music in its many forms surrounds us and is so familiar that we hardly think about where it is coming from, how it evolved and when it first came to be. We are so accustomed to listening to music wherever we go that it’s hard to believe that easily portable recorded music has only been widely available, initially as transistor and car radios, since the 1950s. So, let’s take a look at how the sounds of music came to be recorded and how those recordings evolved over time.
The Lost Town of Woodmere
Before 1921 Venice existed as an unincorporated part of Manatee County. It was during those early years that a company town tied to a lumber mill sprang up just southeast of the community. Lumber prices soared during World War I as so much of it was needed to frame and shore up the trenches on the Western Front in Europe. This drove companies to find new resources to replace the dwindling red and white pines of the Upper Midwest. So, investment eyes turned to the yellow and jack pines of the Southeast.

This year marks a major milestone for our City of Venice. On July 1, 1926, the state law creating the Town of Venice went into effect. Doing some simple math, you can see that the city is turning 100. What does that mean? It means it is a convenient number where we can pause and take stock of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we want to go from here.

For some of you it instantly registered that they were playing the game of croquet, while for others unfamiliar with the sport, it may have raised some questions about what they were doing.
